چکیده

We have reported earlier some work on the grafting of vinyl monomers onto cellulose extracted from pine needles. The grafting was carried out both by radiation1,2 and by a chemical initiation method3,4. The optimum grafting conditions for a single monomer were used to co-graft it with other comonomers so as to improve upon the intrinsic properties of the cellulose backbone5,6. These graft copolymers have been used as effective supports for enzyme immobilization7 and metal ion sorption8. In this article, we report the grafting of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The grafting of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and its binary mixtures with other vinyl monomers onto cellulosics has been attempted by redox systems employing ceric ions9,10 although the grafting of binary monomers has not been extensively investigated. Okieimen and Ogbeifun11 grafted acrylonitrile (AN) and MMA individually and as a binary mixture onto carboxymethyl cellulose, and reported that a smaller amount of poly(AN) is grafted from the monomer mixture, even when using a high AN:MMA feed ratio. The grafting of a binary mixture12 of MMA and acrylamide (AAm) onto dialdehyde cellulose (obtained from cotton) has also been reported. The graft copolymers of cellulose acetate butyrate with MMA and styrene have been reported to show good drying properties, form coatings, and show good weather resistance13.

Synthesis of Cellulose-graft-poly(methyl Methacrylate) via Homogeneous Atrp

Cellulose-graft-poly(methylmethacrylate) (cellulose-g-PMMA) copolymers were prepared by homogeneous atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under mild conditions, in an attempt to develop an efficient way to modify the surface of cellulose. A cellulose macro-initiator was successfully synthesized by direct homogeneous acylation of cellulose with 2-bromopropionyl bromide in a room temperatur...

Synthesis, Characterisation and Flocculation Properties of Carboxymethyl Cellulose-g Acrylamide

Graft copolymers of acrylamide on carboxymethyl cellulose (d.s 0.4-0.5) were prepared by the use of ceric ion, ceric ion/reductant molecule initiator systems in aqueous medium. The graft copolymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy. The extent of graft copolymerisation was measured in terms of grafted chains as a function of both ceric ion and ceric ion/reductant molecule concentrations. It...

Denture base polymers, poly methyl methacrylate improved using free radical copolymerization

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most common material used in Prosthodontics. Several studies indicate a breakdown of the number of very high resin bases after 2 to 3 years to avoid breaking bass and several attempts have been made, such as altering the chemical structure of resin by adding causes cross linking or copolymerization. The innovative method for improving the physical properti...

Study of Immobilization of Protease and Sorption of Bsa on Cellulose, Cellulose Derivatives, and Graft Copolymers

In order to develop novel polymeric supports based on cellulosics, cellulose extracted from pine needles, a perennial resource material available in huge quantities as waste, was graft copolymerized with vinyl monomers. Cellulose, cellulose derivatives, and their graft copolymers with highest percent grafting (Pg) were used as supports for immobilization of an industrially important protease en...
